Turning on the stereo and listening to your favourite tracks can do more than get your toes tapping. Increasing evidence suggests music can have a number of profound effects on the body, including boosting brainpower.
The brain consists of two halves (aka hemispheres) and there is evidence that both hemispheres have different functional specializations. Different tasks such as mathematical processing or problem solving activate different areas of the brain. It was once thought that music was purely a right-brained activity. However, research using imaging technologies (such as functional MRI and positron emission tomography) that allow scientists to study the brain in real time, show otherwise. We now know that listening to music leads to activity in both sides of the brain, including areas responsible for language.
